| I have got to say, I am sick of everyone making this election about race. Personally, I don't care about race. It is a social creation, and as such, if we treat everyone we meet and see as people rather than paying any attention at all to the color of their skin, race would be a non-issue. That said, I did not vote for Obama. Nor did I vote for McCain. I voted for an independant candidate. Not voting for Obama had nothing to do with how much melanin is in his skin. I simply dislike his policies, or his stances on various issues. However, people in the Obama camp invariably want to make it about race. Why? Can't I vote for someone, or not vote for someone, based on what they say, rather than what they look like? Obviously, if I vote for a white person when a black or hispanic or asian candidate is running against him/her, then I am a racist and a bigot. It has nothing to do with the fact that maybe I looked at what they all stand for and decided based on that. I saw something on the news tonight that really, really bothered me. Apparently as part of an exit poll in one of the Carolinas, NBC asked people if race was part of their consideration when voting, and who they voted for. They made a big deal out of the fact that X% of white voters polled made race a part of their decision, but 30% of those STILL voted for Obama! Oh my goodness people, look at that! An interesting thing to note however, is that they said absolutely ZILCH about the responses of people of any other race. Thanks for portraying white people as racists and bigots, but completely ignoring the fact that there are a lot of people who voted FOR Barack Obama simply because he was black. There are people who voted McCain because he is white, there are people who voted for Obama because he is black. What's the difference between those two? People don't talk about the latter, because that's not racism or bigotry, that's pride and it's just different. Different my pasty white backside. It's exactly the same. Any people who say that the only racist voters are white need to pull their self-righteous heads out of their respective backsides and look at the big picture. Anyone can be prejudiced about people with different backgrounds and skin colors. Just because we have a traditional view of black people being maltreated as a result of racism, that does not mean that racism only affects those people. Prejudices affect hispanics, asians, blacks (I will not call someone African-American just because they are vaguely descended from someone who came here from africa 200 years ago. If I'm not scottish-american, they aren't african-american), south pacific islanders, and pretty much everyone else. To be honest, certain groups of white people face just as much discrimination as black people. Try being from the backwoods of eastern Kentucky, or the mountains of Virginia, and see how people treat you when you leave the area. It really feels great when people assume you are stupid simply because you have an accent. You can say the most intelligent things with an eastern Kentucky accent, and no one cares. They hear the accent, not the words. So, don't tell me about racism and discrimination in the election. It works in about a million different directions, and until people can start seeing others as people, and not as races or places, it's going to stay just the same. | | |

| (otherwise known as my night desk shift) So, today when I got to work, everything was in a shambles. Great. Just what I need. Lack of sleep plus a disorganized work area. Gah. So when the RA's came back to the desk I tried to talk to them about it, but all I got was defensiveness. I can't do my job if I can't find the things I need to do my job. It just doesn't happen, y'know? Well, apparently, I was too condescending to the RA's when I told them that I needed the desk to be clean when I got here. So the AHD(assistant hall director) had to come talk to me about the poor little things and how they were just swamped and everything was awful and they're new and thought I was talking down to them. Uggh. So now, if I have a problem with something they're doing, I can't talk to them about it, I have to go through the "chain of command", the resident director or the AHD, or my boss (night desk boss), which isn't really a chain of command, because up next from me is the RA's themselves. BREAK My boss just came in (on rounds) and we talked about things, so I think she's going to take care of the situation. That's good, cause I really don't feel like having to deal with all of it. I do so appreciate her. She's pretty much awesome. :) | | |
| Mmmm, so summer's looking good. Fiancee almost has a job, just needs to
get the paperwork done and then he can start work. Makes me really
happy. Him too, methinks. So it looks like i'm actually going to
get a summer ( a real one) for the first time in oh...a couple of
years. I mean, obviously i'm working, but at least I can get out and go
swimming and do things with friends, y'know? Speaking of swimming...i'm
thinking that Miss Nancy has found her way to lose a little weight this
summer...i mean, i'll have to get a season pass for the pool (it'll
save me money, it will). Other than that....yay! :) and i've
already started to tan a bit....which is nice, because i don't like
being pasty white. not really my thing, y'know? now all i need is that
new swim top and some tanning oil and i'll be set for the summer...time
to rest, and relax...oh yeah, and work weird freakin hours, haha.
speaking of...i just so happen to be at work. otherwise? wouldn't be
awake right now. nope. nothin doin. and i know i sound a bit off it,
but that'll be cause i'm really sleepy. i get goofy when i get tired.
hour and a half and i'm done. woot.
Looks like things are lookin up for me now, but i won't start in on
that whole deal right now. that's a whole other can of worms.
can't wait for 7:30.
can't wait.
